HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov has congratulated university students, teachers, and staff on the upcoming New Year. ‘May each and every one of you spend these festive days in a heartwarming atmosphere, rejuvenating and reuniting with your families. The Student Activist Group at HSE University in Perm has held the large-scale ‘SAWalk: Step into Art’ event. This time, the quest walk was dedicated to Perm art: painting, literature, cinema, theatre, and street art. More than 200 students and 40 teams took part in it.
At the beginning of November, HSE University’s Cultural Centre hosted HSE Unity Fest, a large-scale festival organised by HSE University’s Chamber of Nationalities. The event was attended by 33 national clubs of the university, whose representatives told festival guests about the traditions of different nations.

On September 1st, a new season of the open Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC) started. This competition is aimed at developing the potential of university students who are interested in academic activities. Students, as well as 2023 graduates of Russian and foreign universities, can submit their papers for the competition until October 15th, 2023. This year SRPC turns 20 years old, throughout the competition’s history, Vadim Radaev, HSE University’s First Vice Rector, has been the chair of the organising committee. In today’s interview, he talks about the history of the competition and the key stages in its development.
For the second time, HSE University in Perm has held SaWalk—a quest walk dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Perm and the city’s history and culture. More than 170 participants from 37 teams took part in this large-scale event.
The ‘Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication in Business’ programme at HSE University in Perm places a special emphasis on learning a second foreign language, offering students a choice of German, French, or Chinese. The HSE News Service spoke to students who have been studying Chinese for a year about their experiences of passing an exam for an international certificate and gaining a better understanding of Chinese culture.
Members of the KNIVE vocal ensemble and the HSE Crew dance studio represented HSE University at the opening ceremony and the festival town, while students Polina Subbotina and Yulia Mukharamova were included in the Perm Krai delegation that won the festival’s main prize in the team scoring.
On December 6–7, 2022, the semifinal of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) took place in St Petersburg. Two teams from the HSE Faculty of Computer Science won medals at NERC 2022: FFTilted took overall 2nd place and received the gold medal, and It Has To Work took 8th place (silver medal). Two teams from HSE University—FFTilted (Moscow) and Just3Keks (St Petersburg)—will take part in the ICPC finals, which will be held in Egypt in 2023.
‘We Have Always Loved You, Sakhalin’: Research Expedition Studies Sociocultural Anthropology of Miners' Working Life in the USSR
Researchers from the School of Foreign Languages and the Group for Historical Research, together with students of the History programme at the HSE University campus in Perm, have come back from an expedition to Sakhalin Island, where they studied Soviet industrial culture and the working life of miners. The expedition participants shared their impressions of their ‘immersion into the past’ and the extraordinary landscapes of the island with the HSE News Service.
