Course Syllabus

Abstract

The grammar component of the course is the natural continuation of the grammar component of the course of Practical English. Its goal, however, is not merely to lay down the rules, but rather to describe the architecture of the English language. On the one hand, the student is expected to have mastered the practical grammar of English at approximately the C1/C2 level, on the other hand, the student need have no fear if something has been forgotten - the gaps, should they be discovered, shall be filled. The stylistics component of the course focuses on the system of expressive resources and stylistic devices of the English language in line with the effects achieved. Students will develop their skills of stylistic analysis viewing the text as a unity of semantic, functional, structural, and stylistic elements. Within the format of the course, students learn to analyse and create texts belonging to different functional styles. Seminars offer a variety of practical exercises and creative work. The course contains novel elements - juxtaposition of style and discourse analyses; elements of narratological analysis of emotive prose; the use of generative models (AI) for stylistic and sentiment analysis.
