Different Cultures with Similar Problems

Marina Sheveleva, Associate Professor at the School of Foreign Languages (HSE Perm) took part in a roundtable discussion, ‘Different Cultures, Similar Challenges’, organized by New Jersey Fulbright Chapter in cooperation with Montclair State University.

The discussion was led by Dr. Tina Lesher. At the meeting, grantees and alumni of the Fulbright programme from the United States, Russia, Afghanistan, Spain, and Indonesia discussed some of the general problems that residents of different countries face. The discussion turned out to be animated, interesting and useful for all the participants.  Students and scholars shared their experience of overcoming various difficulties they faced during studies or teaching. Marina Sheveleva spoke about the requirements for a doctoral degree in Russia and the position of professor at universities.

‘A lot of interesting topics on the development of science, healthcare and art in different countries were discussed during the panel. There are various approaches to solving problems in these fields, but we can always study and adopt the positive experience of others,’ said Sheveleva.

In addition to taking part in this discussion, Marina Sheveleva has  also reached the finals of the competition for the Fulbright Faculty Development Programme. She will work at Montclair Public Research University in New Jersey (USA) till January 2016. The grant programme enabled Marina to work on her own course ‘Speaking in Academic Context’.
