The seminar, called ‘Cultural Practices, Social Participation and Voluntary Associations’, was presented by Sarah Busse Spencer, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the HSE.

Prof. Spencer earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Department of Sociology, the heir to the earlier Chicago school of sociology. Sarah’s research interests include problems in public participation in civic organizations.

Discussed during the seminar were similarities and differences in Russian and American nonprofit organizations, as well as problems in the relationship between theory and practice in this topic. Sarah shared her experience from ethnographic research in Novosibirsk with those who attended the seminar. In particular, she talked about the cooperation that takes place among representatives of nonprofit organizations, and had a discussion with seminar participants about the particular characteristics of analyzing data when using qualitative research methods.

 — We hope to continue working with Sarah in both creating an educational sociology programme, and in carrying out research projects devoted to the nonprofit sector and social entrepreneurship. A dialogue with the international academic community is very important for us, — the dean of social sciences and humanities faculty, Olga Mayorova, said.
