The RAEX agency has published the subject rankings of Russian universities in 2024. According to the research, HSE University came first in 13 subjects and leads in five disciplines.

HSE maintained its leading positions in the ‘Three University Missions’ subject ranking in management, psychology, sociology, and economics, and also took first place in the public administration ranking, published for the first time. The university has been ranked second in ‘philology and journalism’ for three years in a row. In addition, HSE was placed third in geography, information technology, history and archaeology, linguistics and foreign languages, mathematics, law, electronics, radio engineering, and communication systems, according to the study compiled by the RAEX agency. Overall, HSE University has expanded its presence in the rankings from 15 to 17 subject areas, entering the ‘geography’ and ‘public administration’ listings.

In total, 170 universities from 43 regions of Russia entered the list of the best in 2024, and this year the number of subject areas has increased to 36.

Subject rankings are based on an assessment of the university's three missions that are used to evaluate education, science, and social value. The rankings show which universities provide the best educational and research training of students in a particular subject area, taking into account the contribution of the university to social development. Statistical data is analysed when compiling subject rankings, and no expert surveys are used.

For assessing the educational mission of universities, the quality of training of enrolled applicants, the university staff, the competitiveness of master's programmes, the amount of funding, the results of students' performances at Russian student olympiads, and the number of mass online courses are evaluated.

The indicators for the scientific field include bibliometric indicators (publications and citations) according to the Web of Science and RSCI databases, income from research, training of highly qualified personnel (doctoral studies), and the number of dissertations, as well as the share of extra-budgetary sources in the total expenditure on research and development.

When evaluating the third category, the social mission of universities, both subject and institutional indicators related to the university as a whole were taken into account. At the subject level, a comparison is conducted on indicators measuring the university's contribution to training specialists for the region, the proportion of students studying in the country, the proportion of enrolled quota students, and the proportion of first-year students from other regions.
