On June 3-7, 2013, the HSE-Perm hosted a visit by the well-known econometrician Anil K. Bera, Professor of Economics at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is most noted for his work with Carlos Jarque on the Jarque–Bera test.
On June 4, 2013, Professor Bera gave a master class to HSE-Perm faculty members, during which he provided the background for the Jarque-Bera test and also discussed contemporary econometric approaches and estimation techniques. Issues of model specifications were discussed in more detail.
In addition, Professor Bera presented a series of lectures in advanced econometrics to undergraduate students of the Economics Faculty. Third-year students learned about spatial econometrics and its application to economic issues. A lecture for graduate students was devoted to the history of the Cobb-Douglas function and Constant Elasticity of Substitution function. Professor Bera devoted special attention to the evolution of approaches to the econometric estimation of these models as well as to a discussion on alternative specifications proposed in contemporary applied research. The classes given by Professor Bera opened up a lively discussion on the part of students and faculty members.
During his five-day stay in Perm, Professor Bera visited the monument to Boris Pasternak, the only one in Russia. Here is what Professor Bera said about our city: The city of Perm is small but rather homelike, compared to Moscow and St. Petersburg. I was particularly impressed by the Opera and Ballet Theater. I have seen many ballet performances, both in New-York and Chicago, and your ballet demonstrates the same high level.
