‘Innovative Methods of Increasing Students’ Motivation’: Seminar for Faculty of School of Foreign Languages at HSE Perm

At the invitation of the School of Foreign Languages, Australian teacher trainer James Thomas visited HSE Perm as part of the ‘Teaching Excellence Initiative’ programme. On September 28, the professor conducted a seminar on ‘Teaching L2 Writing’ for the School’s faculty.

The seminar focused on increasing students’ writing motivation, innovative teaching strategies, and evaluating written work.

The HSE Perm faculty discussed the features of teaching writing in English at university and received answers to important questions on the organization of the educational process from James Thomas.

The seminar was interesting, first of all, with its orientation towards solving certain issues facing us when teaching students academic writing – from essays during the 1st and 2nd year of studies to research proposals during the final stage. I was also happy to learn more about some innovative methods of increasing student motivation through a number of tools and services for analytical work with language material.

I would like to emphasise the interactive format of the seminar: in my opinion, it was the best way to ensure a fruitful exchange of opinions and generate new ideas through brainstorming.
