— You completed your postgraduate programme at Washington State University. What was your dissertation about?

— I got my PhD at WSU, defending my dissertation 'Essays on International Migration in the Former Soviet Union'. My research looked at issues in international migration not only from the economic perspective, but also considering demographic and sociological factors in people's movement around the post-soviet space. I took an interdisciplinary approach.

— What conclusions did you come to in your dissertation?

— In Western universities dissertations as a rule comprise three different sections. In the first I considered issues relating to the impact of migrants' remittances on the rate of economic growth. I.e. does the money migrant send home impact the economic wellbeing of the country in question? The second chapter focused on the factors that influence migration from the former Soviet Union into Russia. And this is not just economic factors, but demographic, cultural, historical, and geographical factors. The third chapter was a separate case study on labor migration from Tajikistan to Russia. In the research I came to the conclusion that this is an interim result. I would like to continue research in this field when I have time to be creative. Now I have quite a heavy teaching load – teaching three classes.

— Which?

— First – econometrics for economics students, it's their major subject. I also teach econometrics to software engineering students and advanced econometrics to Finance MA students. I teach classes for two groups in English, using original teaching materials. Students use textbooks by respected American economist and Professor at Michigan State University Jeffrey Wooldridge. Woolridge's book is very popular, it is used in many higher education institutions in the United States and Europe. So, students at Perm HSE are using the same set texts as students at Western universities.

— Do you plan to launch new classes at the Economics Faculty?

— Yes, I plan to set up new classes, firstly – statistics for economics and business. This will be an applied subject, and teaching will draw on the leading textbooks by Western authors, as well as elective classes on selected topics in advanced micro/macroeconomics. In addition, I will offer consultation for senior years and graduates so they can apply to graduate courses in leading Western universities for their PhD in Economics. Interested students can come to me about this at any time. I want to see talented students continue their education, and of course, increase HSE's ratings.
