Abstract

The discipline is realized with help of online-course “Feminism and Social Justice”. About the online-course: “"Feminism and Social Justice" is an adaptation of Distinguished Professor Bettina Aptheker's long-running course at UC Santa Cruz. In the course, Professor Aptheker presents a broad definition of feminism that serves to frame three significant events in the history of feminism and social justice: the Empire Zinc strike of 1951, the 1971-1972 trial of Angela Davis, and the #metoo Movement” (https://www.coursera.org/learn/feminism-social-justice).

Learning Objectives

  • The main goal of the course is to form a general understanding of feminism that serves to frame three significant events in the history of feminism and social justice: the Empire Zinc strike of 1951, the 1971-1972 trial of Angela Davis, and the #metoo Movement.
Expected Learning Outcomes

  • A student knows variety of conceptual approaches to definition of feminism, social equality and social justice.
  • A student learn about the causes, conditions, and outcomes of the strike, which has places in 1951 at New Mexico .
  • A student knows the personal experience of Dr. Aptheker, who was evidence of Davis' arrest and trial, and learn about the extraordinary movement that grew in support of Davis
  • A student learns about the causes and outcomes of the #metoo movement, and its contribution to feminism and social justice and also discuss recent changes resulting from the #metoo movement.
  • A student prepares, presents and discuss most problems of contemporary feminism.

  • Section 1. Defining Feminism.
    - Explain the working definition of feminism. - Compose a personal definition of feminism. - Discuss the purpose of feminism.
  • Section 2. Salt of the Earth.
    - Recall the names of the major figures of the Empire Zinc strike. - Explain the causes of the Empire Zinc strike. - Discuss the role of protest in feminism and social justice.
  • Section 3. Free Angela.
    - Recall the sequence of events that led to Angela Davis' trial. Understand the causes of Angela Davis' arrest and prosecution. Apply current/differing conditions to the Angela Davis trial.
  • Section 4. The #metoo Movement.
    • Identify societal changes that have resulted from the #metoo movement. • Recall the history of the #metoo movement. • Analyze the effects of the #metoo movement.
  • Section 5. Modernity.
    - identify currents, which exist in feminism movement - Analyze their effects on developing social justice - Recall the history of movement in beginning of XXI century
