Global university rankings usually have different kinds of rankings in order to stay objective. The biggest top list (from 1,000 to 1,500 world’s universities) includes the institutional ranking, which helps us see our university among all kinds of universities and countries. There are rankings by subject, which focus the target audience’s attention on a subject area and usually reflect which universities determine the global research and educational agenda in a specific field.

Other types of rankings group universities in certain groups of countries by the year of their foundation or other criteria. In contrast to institutional rankings, these use other weight indicators to determine a university’s position, taking into account the specificity of the ranking.

Today, THE published the ranking for emerging economies, and this is the third year we can see its results. It takes into account the fact that for most countries, English is neither a native nor an official language, which impacts publication rates and internationalization. In this ranking, the weight of the citation indicator is lower compared to the institutional ranking, while internationalization and industry income weigh more.

This is the second year HSE University has placed in the top 25 of the ТНЕ Emerging Economies ranking. HSE University’s internationalization indicators are continue to improve. Our bilingual environment, which has emerged at the University over the recent years, provides comfortable conditions for our international colleagues and students, and international students’ interest in HSE grows every year.

Even last year, despite the pandemic, we enrolled 12% more international students than in 2019, which had been a record year. This is a sign of the University’s high reputation among international applicants.

The ТНЕ Emerging Economies list was first published in 2014. Before 2019, it was the BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings. The ranking is constantly expanding: while in 2014-2015, it included 100 universities, this year, there are 606. HSE University remains a permanent fixture of the ranking.

ТНЕ Emerging Economies is based on data from THE World University Rankings, the latest version of which was published in September 2020. In contrast to the World University Rankings, the Emerging Economies ranking considers the indicators of internationalization and industry income at an increased weight and that of citations at a decreased weight.
