HSE University consistently appears among the top 30 universities in the world in the Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Rankings, making it one of the highest-rated universities in Russia.

HSE University was ranked 28th among world universities and 4th among Russian universities. This year, 60 Russian universities appeared in the Emerging Economies Rankings—an increase of 12 over last year—with nine making the top 100. MSU, MIPT, and MEPhI appeared alongside HSE in the top 30 of the rankings.

The Times Higher Education Emerging Economies Rankings were first published in 2014, and became the successor to the BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings in 2019. The list of included universities is constantly expanding, growing from 100 in 2014–2015 to 698 this year (a 15% increase since last year). HSE University has consistently appeared in the ranking since 2017, rising 20 places over that time.

The Emerging Economies Rankings are based on data from the World University Rankings, which were most recently published in September 2021. Unlike the World Rankings, the Emerging Economies Rankings place less weight on indicators for citations and extra weight on international outlook and research income.
