White Nights in the Urals
The best way to learn Russian language, culture and history is to make an exciting journey to the heart of Russia. The Summer School is organised by Higher School of Economics in Perm, a city situated in the Ural Mountains, on the border of Europe and Asia. We invite you to spend here two unforgettable weeks when the days are bright and the nights are white. The programme is designed for students of Russian.
Our Summer School is a project-based exploration of Russian language, mentality, history and landscape. Language classes are aimed to provide you with the necessary vocabulary, grammar and communicative formulas which you will master practically during city tours and longer journeys outside Perm. Lectures on Russian history and culture will prepare you for understanding people, places and artefacts which you will be interacting with. All this will culminate in presentations to share your Russian experience with your peer students and tutors at the end of the School.
Instead of traditional language classes we offer you the Russian Language Speaking Club. Interactive approach, modelling real life situations and role games will boost your level of Russian, assist in overcoming language barrier and in perfecting communicative strategies. You will learn the nuances of Russian language etiquette and will be able to present your point of view on everything that excites, challenges and appeals to you. Russian Language Speaking Club is more than memorizing words and drilling grammar, it is creating the world by using the living language in all its variety.
Fossils from Permian geologic period, Perm wooden sculpture, animal style wooden carvings, Perm opera and ballet are world famous. You can learn language, history and culture not only through lectures, but also by visiting places of interest all over Perm Region with our Russian Travel Club. The most exciting among them are the excursions to the old merchant town of Kungur, where you will visit the world famous Kungur Ice Cave and will understand more about the life in the Russian province in the XVII-XIX centuries. In Khokhlovka museum of wooden architecture you will see the brightest examples of Russian and Komi-Permyak buildings such as a salt complex, churches, agricultural complex, bell tower. Not only architecture but folk traditions can be studied here. The unusual collections of wooden sculpture are exhibited in Perm Art Gallery and unique Permian animal style can be seen in the Historical Museum.
