Over the last fifteen years, Daria A. Scala, PhD, has worked in sustainability as an analyst, researcher, and lecturer, focusing on climate change, urban planning, agro-environmental policy, and "green" consumption and production. Her research aims to understand the big picture of sustainability and strategize how to align real-world policies with sustainability goals. Since 2013, she has taught courses in Ecological Economics, Environmental Policy, and Sustainability at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park as an adjunct professor. Her full-time job is with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the environmental agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where she is a policy analyst. How can we use economics to advance sustainability?

Abstract: Economic activity is the primary driver behind observed trends toward unsustainable global disruptions from buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, widespread nutrients in waters, and conversion of wildlife habitats. Economists have suggested that only through application of economic principles can we reverse these trends. In practice, however, individuals and policies do not follow economic principles. Indeed, in many cases, insistence on economic solutions can be counterproductive and move the system closer to unsustainability. So when and how can we use economics to advance sustainability goals?
